DIY Cosmetic Pouch – Sewing Pattern & Tutorial

Today, I made an oval-shaped cosmetic bag zipper pouch for those who want a special design. It’s the perfect size for some cosmetics or travel pouch. I’m sharing the pattern I made, so you can use it to make a beautiful cosmetic pouch.

How To sew a Zipper Pouch Makeup Bag

The finished measurements of this bag are approximately 7⅛″(18㎝) W × 5″(12.5㎝) H × 3⅝″(9㎝) D.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Outer layer ( Quilting Cotton )
1   7⅞″ × 10¾″ (20㎝ × 27㎝)
2   12⅝″ × 2⅜″ (32㎝ × 6㎝)

Lining ( Quilting Cotton )
1   7⅞″ × 10¾″ (20㎝ × 27㎝)
2   12⅝″ × 2⅜″ (32㎝ × 6㎝)

Zipper
1   11⅞″(30㎝)

Fusible fleece (It is similar to Pellon 987F ‘ or ‘Vilene H630’)
1   7⅛″ × 10″ (12㎝ × 11㎝)
2   11⅞″ × 1⅝″ (30㎝ × 4㎝)

Cut the interfacing into the shape of the pattern. And fuse the fusible fleece, centered, to the wrong side. Cut by adding 3/8” from the edge of the interfacing.

With assembled outer layer right side up, center zipper right side facing down along top edge. Pin in place. Using your zipper foot, sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Attach the outer to the other side of the zip the same way.

Open out, press pieces away from and top stitch on both 1/8” away from the zipper.

Instead of sewing a zipper on the lining, fold 3/8″.

Pin the Gusset to the Main Panel, pinning first at the center. Then pin the ends in place. Continue to pin along only the straight edges of the Main Panel, there is no fiddling for these points. With sharp scissors make small snips on the gusset at the round shape of the main panel. The small snips will help the curved edge of the pouch. Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Use the same process to sew the gusset to the other side of the bag pieces.

Put the outer fabric set inside the lining set. Align the zipper opening.

Place the lining to the zipper by blind stitch.

Turn out our cosmetic bag, and the cosmetic bag is ready!

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
