DIY Drawstring Bag with Handle

This is a Drawstring bag with a wide opening so that the contents are easy to find. It has a handle, so it is convenient to carry things. You can use it as a purse bag to hold your wallet or cell phone, or you can store cosmetics. Let’s make it together while watching the video.

Wide open Purse bag Cosmetic bag Tutorial

The finished measurements of this bag are approximately 7⅜″ (18.5㎝) W × 5″(12.5㎝) H × 4″(10㎝) D.

Share this video with a lot of people who need it.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Outer layer ( quilting cotton )
1   6¾″ × 16⅝″(17㎝ × 42㎝)
2   17″ × 2″(43㎝ × 5㎝)

Contrast Color Fabric ( quilting cotton )
2   13″ × 6¾″(33㎝ × 17㎝)
2   9½″ × 2⅜″(24㎝ × 6㎝)

Lining ( quilting cotton )
1   6¾″ × 16⅝″(17㎝ × 42㎝)
2   13″ × 6¾″(33㎝ × 17㎝)

Fusible fleece (It is similar to Pellon 987F ‘ or ‘Vilene H630’)
1   6″ × 15⅞″(15㎝ × 40㎝)
2   11⅞″ × 6″(30㎝ × 15㎝)

Cotton string 70″ (180㎝)

The pattern for making this can be drawn by yourself by watching my YouTube video.

Cut the interfacing into the shape of the pattern.
And fuse the fusible fleece, centered, to the wrong side.

Pin the Gusset to the Main Panel, pinning first at the center. Then pin the ends in place. Continue to pin along only the straight edges of the Main Panel.

Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Use the same process to sew the other side of the bag pieces.

Turn inside out so that the outer layer is exposed.

Place the handle on the outer layer and sew.

Fold the short edge of the casing 3/8″ in, press. Topstitch along both short sides, fold in half and press. Make second casing the same way.

Center one casing along the top edge of outer layer, pin, and stitch in place using 1/8″ seam allowance.

The lining is made in the same way as the outer. (Sewing except for the window hole)

Place and pin the outer layer of the bag over the top of the lining with the right sides together. Sew all the way around.

Turn it right side out by pulling the fabric through the opening.

Topstitch around the entrance of the bag.

Sew the opening hole close by manually.

Start inserting the string through one end of the casing, using a safety pin.
Continue inserting the string into the casing on the other side.
Next, take the other string and start inserting it through the casing from the opposite side. Continue as before.
Tie the ends of the string in a knot and pull the ends to close the bag.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
