DIY Drawstring Purse Bag

This is a cute handbag that you can take with you when you go out.
Although small in size, it can hold a cell phone, wallet, and even a small pouch.
Make this drawstring bag that keeps the shape pretty.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Outer layer ( quilting cotton )
2   7¾″ × 8¾″(19.5㎝ × 22㎝)
1   2″ × 22½″(5㎝ × 57㎝)
2   7½″ × 2⅜″(19㎝ × 6㎝)
1   3¼″ × 10″(8㎝ × 25㎝)

Lining ( quilting cotton )
2   7¾″ × 8¾″(19.5㎝ × 22㎝)
1   2″ × 22½″(5㎝ × 57㎝)

Interfacing (Mid-weight woven – Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex’ or ‘Vilene G700’)
2   7¾″ × 8¾″(19.5㎝ × 22㎝)
1   2″ × 22½″(5㎝ × 57㎝)

1⅝″(4㎝) Wide Bias tape – 51⅜″(130㎝)
Cotton string 39½″ (100㎝)

The pattern for making this can be drawn by yourself by watching my YouTube video.

Fold the fabric where the string will go in half lengthwise and place it in the center of the outer layer.

Place the lining, right side down on top. Pin in place.
Sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Open out, you can see the part where the string goes in.

Align both ends of the handle between the outer and lining of the gusset panel and sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

The handle and gusset are connected.

Place the bias on the outer layer of the front and back panel and sew with an allowance of about 1/4″.

Mark the center of the front, back and gusset.
Pin the Gusset to the Main Panel, pinning first at the center. Then pin the ends in place.
Continue to pin along only the straight edges of the Main Panel, there is no fiddling for these points.
With sharp scissors make small snips on the gusset at the round shape of the main panel.
The small snips will help the curved edge of the pouch.
Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

After sewing both the front and back panels to the gusset, stitch the bias from the right side seam into seam, or sew manually from the backside.

Start inserting the string through one end of the casing, using a safety pin.
Continue inserting the string into the casing on the other side.
Next, take the other string and start inserting it through the casing from the opposite side. Continue as before.
Tie the ends of the string in a knot and pull the ends to close the bag.

Attach the strap.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
