DIY Shoulder Purse Bag

Today, I made a pretty shoulder purse bag with floral fabric. This bag can be used as a baguette bag as the length of the shoulder strap is adjustable. I have shared the pattern so anyone can make it.

How to make Fabric Handbag Sewing Pattern & Tutorial

The finished measurements of this bag are approximately 12¼″(31㎝) W × 8″(20㎝) H × 2¾″(7㎝) D.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Outer layer ( Quilting cotton )
2   13″ × 9″(33㎝ × 23㎝)
1   26⅛″ × 3½″(66㎝ × 9㎝)
1   39½″ × 3″(100㎝ × 7.5㎝)

Lining ( quilting cotton )
2   13″ × 9″(33㎝ × 23㎝)
1   26⅛″ × 3½″(66㎝ × 9㎝)
1   9″ × 10″(23㎝ × 25㎝)

Zipper
1   10″(25㎝), 1   8″(20㎝)

Fusible fleece (It is similar to Pellon 987F ‘ or ‘Vilene H630’)
2   12¼″ × 8″(31㎝ × 20㎝)
1   25⅜″ × 2¾″(64㎝ × 7㎝)

1⅝″(4㎝) wide bias tape 55¼″(140㎝)
3/4″ (2㎝) wide Square ring and Triglides Slide

Cut the interfacing into the shape of the pattern.
And fuse the fusible fleece, centered, to the wrong side.

Cut by adding 3/8” from the edge of the interfacing.

Place the piece of fabric for your pocket lining face down, right sides together over your outer piece. Then stitch exactly around the rectangle according to the shape of the square hole of the interfacing.

Draw another line through the center of the rectangle right across.
At each end, draw a triangle from the corners to that center line. Carefully cut along the center line until your reach the triangle, and then snip into the corners, close to, but not through, your line of stitching. Turn the lining fabric through the hole you just cut and out to the back. Press the opening neatly.
Time now to place our zipper. Sewing with the front upper most, stitch around the opening to secure the zipper in place.

Fold up the pocket lining and pin along the 3 open sides. Stitch the 3 sides of the pocket lining , making sure to only sew the lining, not through the outer fabric as well.

With assembled outer layer right side up, center zipper right side facing down along top edge. Pin in place. Using your zipper foot, sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Place the lining, right side down on top. Pin in place. Using your zipper foot, sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Open out, press pieces away from and top stitch on both 1/8” away from the zipper.

Mark the center point of the main fabric and the side plate fabric.

Align both ends of the zipper with the ends of the side plate and sew only 3/4 inch.

Sew together the outer and lining of the side plate to secure it.

Pin the Gusset to the Main Panel, pinning first at the center. Then pin the ends in place. Continue to pin along only the straight edges of the Main Panel, there is no fiddling for these points. With sharp scissors make small snips on the gusset at the round shape of the main panel. The small snips will help the curved edge of the pouch.
Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

The bias tape is placed and pinned as pictured, stitch up to the end.

Stitch from the right side seam into seam, or sew manually from the backside.

Attach the strap.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
