DIY Small Tote Bag with Gusset

How cool would it be if you could make one bag and use it in two styles? Today I will show you how to make just such a tote bag. It will be more convenient to use by applying pockets on the outside and inside of the bag.
Let’s make with me.

Handmade Tote Bag available in two styles

The finished measurements of this bag are approximately 13¾″(35㎝) W × 11⅞″(30㎝) H × 1¼″(7.5㎝) D.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

2   14½″ × 11¼″ (37㎝ × 28.5㎝) Lining

Front Pocket
1   14½″ × 8″ (37㎝ × 20㎝) Outer layer
1   14½″ × 8″ (37㎝ × 20㎝) Lining

Gusset
1   31⅝″ × 3¾″ (80㎝ × 9.5㎝) Outer layer
1   31⅝″ × 3¾″ (80㎝ × 9.5㎝) Lining

Strap Sleeve
2   11⅝″ × 3⅝″ (29.5㎝ × 9㎝) Outer layer
2   11⅝″ × 3⅝″ (29.5㎝ × 9㎝) Lining

Inside Pocket
1   14½″ × 15″ (37㎝ × 38㎝) Lining

2″(2.5㎝) wide Webbing Strap 35⅜″(90㎝)

The pattern for making this can be drawn by yourself by watching my YouTube video.

Place the right sides together of the outer and lining of the front pocket fabric and sew the top with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Open out, press and top stitch.

Place the front pocket on the right side of the main fabric and sew edge.

Mark the center on the main fabric and the gusset.

Pin the Gusset to the Main Panel, pinning first at the center. Then pin the ends in place. Continue to pin along only the straight edges of the Main Panel, there is no fiddling for these points.

With sharp scissors make small snips on the gusset at the round shape of the main panel. The small snips will help the curved edge of the bag. Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Use the same process to sew the gusset to the other side of the bag pieces.

Place the right sides together of the outer and lining of the strap sleeve fabric and sew both sides with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Turn it right side out. Press and topstitch both ends.

Fold the strap sleeves in half. Place them on the main fabric 6 inches interval.

Sew with an allowance of about 1/4″.

Put the outer layer into the lining.

Align and pining the opening of the bag. Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Turn out the bag through the opening on the lining. After this, sew up this hole.

Insert the strap through the strap sleeve.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
