DIY Japanese Knot Bag

A Japanese knot bag is small open tote bag. It has asymmetrical handles, and one of the handles slips through the other to form a knot and close the bag. No need for zippers, buttons, or drawstrings.
It’s simple, fun, and it doesn’t take a lot of time.

You may watch the full video tutorial on my Youtube channel.

Share this video with a lot of people who need it.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Outer layer ( quilting cotton )
2   8¾″ × 12⅞″(22㎝ × 30.5㎝)
1   5½″ × 2¾″(14㎝ × 7㎝)

Lining ( quilting cotton )
2   8¾″ × 12⅞″(22㎝ × 30.5㎝)
1   5½″ × 2¾″(14㎝ × 7㎝)

The pattern for making this can be drawn by yourself by watching my YouTube video. Cut the pattern symmetrically on both sides.

Place the bottom fabric on the outer layer of the body. Pin and sew just the bottom line.

Sew the other fabric to the bottom with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Use the same process to sew the lining.

Align the handle and the side line of the 2 sheets of outer layer, pin and sew the upper part of the handle and the side line.

Use the same process to sew the lining. With sharp scissors make small snips on the curve.

After turning the lining over so that the outside is visible, put it inside the outer layer and align the handle.

Sew the inner line of the handle with a seam allowance of 3/8”.

Turn it right side out and topstitch the inner line of the handle.

Fold the outside of the handle within 3/8″.

Face the outer and lining of the handle, and sew the outside of the handle.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
