DIY Tote Bag with side pockets

This is a tote bag with two side pockets and two handles attached to the side. This spacious bag has one small pocket inside and a flap to protect your belongings. I recommend making this with canvas cotton fabric without a interfacing.

How to make a Canvas Fabric Shopping Bag

The finished measurements of this bag are approximately 14″(35㎝) W × 9″(22.5㎝) H × 5″(12.5㎝) D.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Outer layer ( Canvas cotton )
2   15″ × 9¾″(38㎝ × 24.5㎝)
2   1⅛″ × 2″(14.5㎝ × 22㎝)
1   15¾″ × 5¾″(40㎝ × 14.5㎝)
1   8″ × 5¾″(20㎝ × 14.5㎝)
2   8¾″ × 14¾″(22㎝ × 37㎝)
1   8¾″ × 8¼″(22㎝ × 21㎝)
2   4¾″ × 14¾″(12㎝ × 37㎝)

Lining ( quilting cotton )
2   15″ × 9¾″(38㎝ × 24.5㎝)

1   8″ × 5¾″(20㎝ × 14.5㎝)
1   8¾″ × 8¼″(22㎝ × 21㎝)

Magnetic Button
Mid-weight woven fusible interfacing (Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex’ or ‘Vilene G700’)
1   2″×2″(5㎝ × 5㎝)

The pattern for making this can be drawn by yourself by watching my YouTube video.

Place the right sides together of the outer and lining of the flap and sew 3 sides with an allowance of about 3/8″. Turn right side out. Topstitch the edges of 3 sides.

Place the flap on top the outer layer and baste with long stitch 1/8 inch from the top.

Make inner pocket. Place it on the right side of the lining and sew.

Fold the side pocket fabrics in half. Cut the lower part to be 5¾″ and sew 4 sides.

Put the side pockets on the right side of side fabric. And sew 3 sides.

Place side panels on both ends of the bottom fabric and sew to connect.

Fold the handle pieces in half, wrong sides together to make a crease. Then fold each edge in toward the middle and press. Stitch along both long edges of the strip, 1/8” from the edge. Place them on both side panels and sew.

Pin the Gusset to the Main Panel, pinning first at the center. Then pin the ends in place. Continue to pin along only the straight edges of the Main Panel, there is no fiddling for these points. With sharp scissors make small snips on the gusset at the round shape of the main panel. The small snips will help the curved edge of the bag. Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

For the lining, leave a hole in the bottom and sew.

Attach your bottom panels to your side zipper panel.

Turn the outer layer right side out. Put the outer layer inside the lining. Align the bag opening and sew with a seam allowance of 3/8″.

Turn out our bag through the hole that we left not stitched. After this, sew up this hole.

Put the lining into the bag and Topstitch all the way around of the top of the bag entrance.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
