DIY Zipper Purse Bag

Today, I will introduce a cute handbag with a curved pocket on the front and a zip pocket on the back. This bag, which is a good size for going out with a wallet, cell phone, and cosmetics, has a pocket inside, so it is convenient to store small items. I hope you all enjoy making it with the patterns I shared.

The finished measurements of this bag are approximately 10″(25㎝) W × 6″(15㎝) H × 2⅜″(6㎝) D.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

Outer layer ( Quilting Cotton )
1   10¾″ × 6¾″ (27㎝ × 17㎝)
1   10¾″ × 6¼″ (27㎝ × 16㎝)
1   10¾″ × 5⅛″ (27㎝ × 13㎝)

Contrast Color Fabric ( quilting cotton )
1   10¾″ × 6¾″ (27㎝ × 17㎝)
2   14½″ × 1¾″ (37㎝ × 4.5㎝)
1   16⅞″ × 3⅛″ (43㎝ × 8㎝)
2   3¼″ × 10¾″ (8㎝ × 27㎝)

Lining ( Quilting Cotton )
2   10¾″ × 6¾″ (27㎝ × 17㎝)
1   10¾″ × 6¼″ (27㎝ × 16㎝)
1   10¾″ × 5⅛″ (27㎝ × 13㎝)
2   14½″ × 1¾″ (37㎝ × 4.5㎝)
1   16⅞″ × 3⅛″ (43㎝ × 8㎝)
1   7⅛″ × 8″ (18㎝ × 20㎝)

Zipper
1   13¾″(35㎝), 1   6″(15㎝)

Fusible fleece (It is similar to Pellon 987F ‘ or ‘Vilene H630’)
2   10″ × 6″ (25㎝ × 15㎝)
2   13¾″ × 1″ (35㎝ × 2.5㎝ )
1   16⅛″ × 2⅜″ (41㎝ × 6㎝)

Mid-weight woven fusible interfacing (Pellon SF-101 Shape Flex’ or ‘Vilene G700’)
1   10″ × 5½″ (25㎝ × 14㎝)
1   10″ × 4⅜″ (25㎝ × 11㎝)
1   2″ × 2″ (5㎝ × 5㎝)

1⅝″(4㎝) wide bias tape 67″(170㎝)
Magnetic Button

Cut the interfacing into the shape of the pattern. And fuse the interfacing, centered, to the wrong side. Cut by adding 3/8” from the edge of the interfacing.

Place the right sides together of the outer and lining of the front pocket fabric and sew curved seam with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Turn it over and topstitch curved top. Place the front pocket on the right side of the main fabric and sew.

Place the right sides together of the outer and lining of the inside pocket fabric and sew top with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Turn it over and topstitch. Place the inside pocket on the right side of the lining of the main fabric and sew.

Place the piece of fabric for your pocket lining face down, right sides together over your outer piece. Then stitch exactly around the rectangle you just drew. Draw another line through the center of the rectangle right across. At each end, draw a triangle from the corners to that center line. Carefully cut along the center line until your reach the triangle, and then snip into the corners, close to, but not through, your line of stitching. Turn the lining fabric through the hole you just cut and out to the back. Press the opening neatly.

Time now to place our zipper. Sewing with the front upper most, stitch around the opening to secure the zipper in place. Fold up the pocket lining and pin along the 3 open sides. Stitch the 3 sides of the pocket lining , making sure to only sew the lining, not through the outer fabric as well.

Fold the handle pieces in half, wrong sides together to make a crease. Then fold each edge in toward the middle and press. Stitch along both long edges of the strip, 1/8” from the edge. Place and sew the handles 3⅝″ interval.

Place the wrong sides together of the outer and lining of the main fabric and sew with an allowance of about 1/4″.

With assembled lining right side up, center zipper right side facing up along top edge. Place the outer layer, right side down on top. Pin in place. Using your zipper foot, sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance. Open out, press pieces away from the zipper. Attach the outer and lining to the other side of the zip the same way.

Open out, press pieces away from and top stitch on both 1/8” away from the zipper.

Place the right sides together of the zipper panel and gusset and sew both ends with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Pin the Gusset to the Main Panel, pinning first at the center. Then pin the ends in place. Continue to pin along only the straight edges of the Main Panel, there is no fiddling for these points. With sharp scissors make small snips on the gusset at the round shape of the main panel. The small snips will help the curved edge of the bag. Sew all the way around.

Pin the bias tape to the details. The bias tape is placed and pinned as pictured, stitch up to the end.

Stitch from the right side seam into seam, or sew manually from the backside.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
