This hybrid pouch combines a secure zipper with a clever drawstring interior, so everything stays exactly where it should. It’s been my favorite project lately, and I can’t wait to show you how it all comes together.

Fold the elastic pocket fabric in half and sew 5/8″ down from the top. Place the elastic pocket over the main fabric lining and adjust the shape.
Fold the top of the drawstring pocket fabric twice, 3/8″ and 5/8″ apart. Place the two pieces of fabric with the wrong sides facing each other and sew along the sides with a 3/16″ seam allowance. Flip the fabric over, place the wrong sides facing each other, and sew along the sides with a 3/8″ seam allowance.

With assembled lining right side up, center zipper right side facing up along top edge. Place the outer layer, right side down on top. Pin in place. Using your zipper foot, sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance.
Open out, press pieces away from the zipper. Attach the outer and lining to the other side of the zip the same way. Open out, press pieces away from and top stitch on both 1/8” away from the zipper.

Sew the right sides of the back panel together at the end of the zipper panel. Sew the opposite sides of the back panel together at the other end of the zipper panel. Flip inside out and sew the outer fabric and lining together.

Do this by marking the quarter of your main panel and the quarter of your zipper panel. Now, using your quarter marks, start pining the center of your zipper panel around the perimeter of your main panel. Sew all the edges with an allowance of about 3/8″.
Bind the seam allowance with bias tape and sew.

Attach a safety pin on one end of string and thread it through the first hole, going all around and coming out in the hole next to it. Attach a safety pin to your other string and starting on the opposite side, do the same thing. Knot the two ends of ribbon on each side together.
