DIY Canvas Crossbody Bag

It is a crossbody bag made of a slightly thick canvas fabric.
The front of the bag has a smartphone pocket and a small zipped pocket for credit cards.
And by applying piping to the rim of the bag, the edge looks clear.
Watch the video and follow the steps to make your own canvas crossbody bag.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Outer layer ( quilting cotton )
2   7½″ × 8¼″(19㎝ × 21㎝)
2   12¾″ × 1¾″(32㎝ × 4.5㎝)
1   15¾″ × 3⅛″(40㎝ × 8㎝)
1   3⅛″ × 7⅛″(8㎝ × 18㎝)
1   4¾″ × 12″(12㎝ × 30㎝)

Lining ( quilting cotton )
2   7½″ × 8¼″(19㎝ × 21㎝)
2   12¾″ × 1¾″(32㎝ × 4.5㎝)
1   15¾″ × 3⅛″(40㎝ × 8㎝)
1   5¼″ × 7⅜″(13㎝ × 18.5㎝)

Zipper
1   12″(30㎝), 1   4″(10㎝)

1″(2.5㎝) wide Triglides Slide, Square Ring
1″(2.5㎝) wide Webbing Strap 63¼″(160㎝)
Magnetic button
3㎜ cotton string 63¼″(160㎝)
1¼″(3㎝) wide Bias tape 63¼″(160㎝)
1½″(4㎝) wide Bias tape 11⅞″(30㎝), 63¼″(160㎝)

The pattern for making this can be drawn by yourself by watching my YouTube video.

Place the piece of fabric for your pocket lining face down, right sides together over your outer piece. Draw a long rectangular box which the teeth of your zipper will fit inside. Then stitch exactly around the rectangle you just drew.

Draw another line through the center of the rectangle right across.
At each end, draw a triangle from the corners to that center line.Carefully cut along the center line until your reach the triangle, and then snip into the corners, close to, but not through, your line of stitching. Turn the lining fabric through the hole you just cut and out to the back. Press the opening neatly.

Time now to place our zipper. Sewing with the front upper most, stitch around the opening to secure the zipper in place. Fold up the pocket lining and pin along the 3 open sides. Stitch the 3 sides of the pocket lining , making sure to only sew the lining, not through the outer fabric as well.

Sew the bias to the lid of the phone pocket.

Place the phone pocket and lid on the front of the bag and sew.

Layer an outer piece face up, then the zipper face down along one edge, and then the lining face down. Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Use the same process to sew the zipper to the other side of the bag pieces.

Topstitch the fabric down both sides of the zipper.

Place the zipper panel between the outer and lining of the side fabric and sew both ends.

Place a cotton string on the inside of the bias and sew to make the piping. Put piping on the right side of the outer layer and sew.

Mark the quarter points of the front, back, and side panels.

Sew the side panel and the back panel by aligning the quarter points.

Sew the side and front panels in the same way.

Apply a bias to the seam allowance.

After turn right side out, pass the bag strap through the Triglides Slide and fix it.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
