DIY Square Duffel Bag with Side Pockets

Today, I made a simple square-shaped duffel bag. There are pockets on both sides for convenient storage of small items. And the inside of this bag is neat because it is lined without using vias. If You use a bit hard canvas fabric, interfacing is not needed.

How to make a Travel Luggage Bag

The finished measurements of this bag are approximately 15¾″(40㎝) W × 8″(20㎝) H × 8″(20㎝) D.

Seam allowances are 3/8″ unless otherwise specified.

Let's get started!!

To make this you will need:

Main Fabric
1   16⅝″ × 30⅛″ (42㎝ × 76.2㎝) Outer layer
1   16⅝″ × 30⅛″ (42㎝ × 76.2㎝) Lining
1   16⅝″ × 30⅛″ (42㎝ × 76.2㎝) Mid-weight woven fusible interfacing (Optional)

Side Fabric
2   8¾″ × 8¾″ (22㎝ × 22㎝) Outer layer
2   8¾″ × 8¾″ (22㎝ × 22㎝) Lining
2   8¾″ × 8¾″ (22㎝ × 22㎝) Mid-weight woven fusible interfacing (Optional)

Side Pocket
2   8¾″ × 5¾″ (22㎝ × 14.5㎝) Outer layer
2   8¾″ × 5¾″ (22㎝ × 14.5㎝) Lining
2   8¾″ × 5¾″ (22㎝ × 14.5㎝) Mid-weight woven fusible interfacing (Optional)

Handle Fabric
1   20½″ × 8¾″ (52㎝ × 22㎝) Outer layer

1   15⅞″ (40㎝) Zipper

The pattern for making this can be drawn by yourself by watching my YouTube video.

Place the right sides together of the side pocket fabric. Sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Open out, press pieces away from and top stitch.

Place the side pocket on the right side of the side panel and sew 3 sides.

With assembled outer layer right side up, center zipper right side facing down along top edge. Pin in place. Using your zipper foot, sew along top edge using a 3/8″ seam allowance.

Attach the other side of the outer layer to the other side of the zip the same way.

Fold the handle fabric in half, wrong sides together to make a crease. Then fold each edge in toward the middle and press. Stitch along both long edges of the strip, 1/8” from the edge.

Place the handle on the both sides of the main fabric and sew.

Do this by marking the quater of your bottom panel and the quater of your side panel (these are attached to each other at this point but just fold the piece in half to find the center). Now, using your quater marks, start pining the bottom of your side panel around the perimeter of your bottom.

Sew with an allowance of about 3/8″.

Use the same process to sew the lining. Just fold both ends by 3/8″ the part where the zipper will be visible.

Turn the lining right side out.

Place and pin the zipper opening of the lining and outer layer with the right sides together.

Sew the zipper opening.

YOU ARE FINISHED!

Happy sewing!
